Concessions on General Rates are currently available to persons eligible under the Rates and Charges (Rebates & Deferments) Act, 1992. (All other charges must be paid in full). Eligibility Criteria – To be eligible for concessions under the Rates and Charges (Rebates and Deferments) Act 1992, an applicant must: own and occupy the property on the 1st July of the rating year
AND EITHER:
hold a Pensioner Concession Card or a State Concession Card. (This entitles the applicant to claim a rebate of up to 50% off the current years GENERAL rates or in certain circumstances to defer payment of those GENERAL Rates).
OR
hold a Seniors Card issued by the Office of Seniors Interests and a Commonwealth Seniors Health Card. (This entitles the applicant to claim a rebate of up to 50% off the current years GENERAL rates or in certain circumstances to defer payment of those GENERAL Rates).
OR
hold a Seniors Card only. (This entitles the applicant to claim a rebate of up to 25% off the current years General rates which is limited to a maximum amount. There is no option to defer payment of those general rates).
Registration: Important Information A pro-rata rebate may be available from the date of registration to persons who become eligible after 1 July of the rating year (i.e. are issued with a pensioner, state or seniors card). If you have rates and charges owing on your property you may be able to enter into an arrangement to pay the arrears owing. You may also register and be entitled to claim a rebate of up to 50% off the current years GENERAL rates or in certain circumstances to defer payment of those GENERAL Rates." If your circumstances change – particularly with respect to your ownership or occupation of the property, or your eligibility as a Senior or Pensioner – you must notify Council and the Water Corporation. Your registration will be cancelled or amended, as appropriate. All other rates and charges must be paid within 35 days of the issue of the rate notices. A rebate or deferment (where eligible) is available on only one property in any one rating year. (i.e. the property owned and occupied as at 1 July). Where the deferment option in available, general rates are deferred automatically if not paid by 30 June of the year to which the account relates. If the property is occupied by a Life tenant under the terms of a Will of a deceased estate, deferment is not allowed and the rebated amount must be paid by 30 June. If the property is sold and another purchased a new application must be made for the new property.
Extract from the Act 38. A person who- (a) for the purpose of any application under this Act, knowingly provides information that is false or misleading in any material particular; (b) omits to notify an administrative authority of a change of circumstances, as required by Section 35; or (c) for the purpose of trying to obtain a benefit under this Act purports- (i) to retain an entitlement, knowing that the entitlement as registered had ceased to exist; or (ii) to be an eligible person, knowing that the eligibility had ceased. commits an offence. Penalty - $1,000.00. Top Valuations of properties within the Shire have been supplied by the Valuer General. An objection against a valuation must be lodged with the Valuer General or the Shire Office within 42 days of receiving a rate assessment notice. The lodgement of an objection does not alter the obligation to pay the full amount of rates by the date specified in the assessment notice.
