The Community and Economic Development team works with local residents, organisations and groups to develop projects, ideas and initiatives that bring the community together and improve our overall quality of life.

There is a diverse range of community and sporting groups across the Shire of Harvey from Senior Citizens and craft groups to playgroups and volunteer fire and rescue. The Shire encourages its residents to get involved in the local community, meet new friends and have fun. If you are interested in getting involved and volunteering with any of these groups, please contact the Shire's Community and Economic Development team.
What is the Community Sail Training Trust?
The Community Sail Trust has been running since 1989. Annual contributions are made by the Shire of Harvey and local service clubs including the Australind Lions, Brunswick Lions, Harvey Lions and the Harvey Rotary Club to support young residents financially take a voyage on the sail training ship Leeuwin II. This opportunity creates a number of challenges for the participants to contribute to all aspects of the ship operations, from sailing, steering, navigating, and cleaning the ship to climbing the mast. Each participant can choose what level of challenge they want to take. This ship is run and owned by the not-for-profit organisation, the Leeuwin Ocean Adventure Foundation.
Who can apply for the subsidy?
Subsidy applicants must be a resident of the Shire of Harvey and aged 15 – 25. Applicants must pass specific medical requirements for the voyage. Booking confirmation is conditional on the Foundation’s approval that he or she is medically and physically fit to undertake the voyage.
Applications for a subsidy on a 2012 voyage have now closed.
How much do I pay?
It is requested that applicants contribute a minimum of $350 towards their trip for Youth Explorer Voyages (voyage fares are usually up to $1,800) and a contribution of $270 towards their trip for the Ultimate Challenge (voyage fares are usually up to $1350). The remaining fee is paid by the Shire of Harvey Community Sail Training Trust (Ultimate Challenge Voyage is designed for young people with limitations that prevent them from participating on a standard Youth Explorer program to find out more please contact the Leeuwin Foundation on 9430 4103).

Harvey Community Radio is based in Harvey and has served the greater south west region since the 9th June 2004.
