National Year of Reading

Tue, 06 Sep 2011 15:05:17 WST by Caris, 34500 views

The National Year of Reading 2012 is dedicated to encouraging keen readers to find new sources of inspiration, to teach children and adults how to read for information and pleasure, and to developing a range of reading initiatives whilst respecting the oral tradition of storytelling. It will help people discover and rediscover the magic of books. And most of all, it will encourage Australians to become a nation of readers.

Aims of the special year include

  • For all Australians to understand the benefits of reading as a life skill and a catalyst for well-being;
  • To promote a reading culture in every home; and
  • To establish a goal of families sharing books with their children every day.

Harvey Shire Libraries have a variety of activities lined up – something for every month of the year.  The programme includes “Get caught reading” photo competition,  Reader of the Month Award, Reading Pentathlon,  Library Lover’s Day mystery books,. Spot Prize loans, and providing books for homeless readers.  Visit your local library to join in!
