The Shire of Harvey is involved in a variety of projects, strategies and initiaves to care for our natural enviroment. Some of these include:

 South West Biodiversity Project (SWBP)

The SWBP is a project that was developed by the Western Australian Local Government Association (WALGA) as an initiative to support Local Government toward effective management of natural areas and biodiversity conservation in land use planning.

Over 2006 and 2007, the Shire engaged a consultant to assess nineteen reserves vested in or owned by the Shire of Harvey. Detailed assessments of the reserves were undertaken and a number of management recommendations listed. The reports from the SWBP have become an important tool for the Shire in providing guidance for the long term on-ground management of these reserves.

Shire of Harvey Draft Local Biodiversity Strategy

The draft Local Biodiversity Strategy is a key Shire initiative to assist in the conservation of natural areas – bushland, wetlands, estuarine areas and foreshores. The main focus of the strategy is how local natural areas (LNAs) can be protected through the planning process as development occurs within or around them.

ICLEI Water CampaignTM

The Shire of Harvey is a participant in the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) Water CampaignTM.

In 2007, the Shire developed a Local Action Plan that details the specific management actions that the Shire of Harvey is implementing to achieve its objectives in relation to water conservation and water quality improvement.

Peron Naturaliste Partnership

The Peron Naturaliste Partnership was formed in 2010 by a number of the local government authorities that cover the geographical areas of Point Peron to Cape Naturaliste in the South West of Western Australia. The Peron Naturaliste Partnership recognises the benefits of forming a strategic partnership to establish appropriate management responses to coastal vulnerability.

Shire of Harvey Coastal Management Plan

The Shire of Harvey developed a Coastal Management Plan in 2006 to provide a framework for future decision making and management regarding the Shire’s coastal areas.
