All construction of buildings on land within the Shire is subject to compliance with the “Building Act 2012”. Prior to the commencement of any earthworks, construction, alterations or additions, the person causing the works to be carried out, must lodge an application for a building permit, have paid the appropriate fee and be issued with a building permit.
The term ‘building’ includes a fence, mast, antenna, retaining or free standing wall, swimming pools, spas, carport, pergola, shed, dwelling, office, shop, factory, warehouse, public building and the like. Residents are encouraged to contact the Shire of Harvey first before lodging an application.
Please note, that a building permit is only required for a fence if it exceeds 1.2 metres in height from the natural ground level or within three (3) metres of the front boundary of any lot
Whilst Council is reluctant to take action against its residents, offences against the Building Act 2012 will not be condoned.

The Shire of Harvey advises the public and its stakeholders that the Shire’s Building Department moved to the newly refurbished Australind Administration Office, Mulgara Street on Monday, 21st December 2015.
What does this mean for our customers?
Whilst building staff will be physically located at the Australind Office they will continue to be available by pre-arranged appointment at either the Australind or Harvey Offices and will continue to undertake site inspections where required. Appointments can be made by contacting Council’s Building Department on 9729 0330.
