What do you enjoy most about teaching children to swim?
I absolutely love teaching beginner classes! Watching children grow in confidence and seeing their smiling faces when they first manage to paddle themselves through the water is just awesome.
What do you think is the most important thing children gain from swimming lessons, beyond learning strokes?
Swimming opens up so many opportunities to have fun and socialise. Once children learn to swim, they can enjoy trips to the pool or beach with friends during school holidays and weekends. It’s a skill that gives them freedom and enjoyment for years to come.
What’s your favourite moment to see during a child’s swimming journey?
It’s when a child who was once scared of the water becomes confident enough to really enjoy themselves. Seeing those big smiles when they realise they can do it is priceless!
How do you help children who might feel nervous or unsure in the water build their confidence?
Lots of reassurance, taking small steps and celebrating every achievement along the way. A little encouragement and plenty of praise can make a huge difference to a child’s confidence.
What keeps you motivated to teach swimming and help the next generation become confident and safe in the water?
I loved swimming growing up, and it’s pretty much how I spent my Christmas holidays! If I can help children learn to swim safely and develop that same love of the water, hopefully they’ll enjoy many happy hours swimming just as much as I did.
