The winners of the 2022 Community Awards were announced at the Shire’s annual Community Awards Dinner on Thursday, 9 June at Leschenault Recreation Pavilion.

The winners of the 2022 Community Awards were announced at the Shire’s annual Community Awards Dinner on Thursday, 9 June at Leschenault Recreation Pavilion.

The annual event celebrates the achievements of individuals and groups that make a valuable contribution to our community.

Shire of Harvey President Paul Gillett said the recipients were local individuals and groups that have provided a significant contribution to our community.

“With an ongoing commitment to serve our community, our award winners have made an exceptional contribution to our community and their input deserves to be highlighted,” Cr Gillett said.

“Tonight highlights what a great community we have.

“Congratulations to the amazing community members for the contributions you have made.”

2022 Community Awards winners

Meritorious Service Award - Jennifer Maughan

For over half her life time Jennifer has given her time, efforts and expertise to the Harvey community. Each of the groups she is or has been involved in are very much part of the fabric of the Harvey community. Jennifer laid the foundations for future generations to build on the high level of commitment, service and dedication to her beloved community.

Appreciation Award - Julie-Ann Ford

As the Manager for the Yarloop Community Resource Centre for the past eight years Julie-Ann has been committed to the rebirth, health and growth of the Yarloop community. Julie-Ann has understood the importance of being someone that their community can trust, rely and call upon for compassion and strength. This award is presented to Julie-Ann from a grateful community.

Appreciation Award - Kerry Morrison

Kerry Morrison has actively served the Australian Breastfeeding Association since 2007 and as a Trained Volunteer Breastfeeding Counsellor since 2009. By empowering mothers Kerry has had a tremendous impact on families and parents whose lives she has impacted with her caring, supportive and nurturing nature. 

Appreciation Award - Seana Sloan

Being a passionate supporter of the local community Seana enthusiastically volunteered to be a part of the communication link between the community and the Shire. Seana contributes to group discussions, and regularly shares information from the Shire with her network in her own time. Balancing volunteering with work, family and social commitments is something Seana takes in her stride. Her ongoing dedication to making the local community a better place, and her willingness to go above and beyond, is something we can all aspire to.

Youth Award - Mia Nandapi

Mia joined the Binningup Surf Life Saving Club as a Nipper in 2011 and gained her first surf lifesaving qualification in February 2018. Mia has volunteered 122 lifesaving service hours including beach patrols for the community and water safety duties for the club’s junior program. As a respected and popular club member Mia is an amazing role model for the younger members, an asset to our community and a worthy recipient of the youth award.

Community Group Award - Binningup Surf Life Saving Club

Since becoming incorporated and affiliated with Surf Lifesaving WA in 2001 the Binningup Surf Life Saving Club have served their community. The club runs a variety of programs that provide training, socialisation, fitness and connection for people of all ages. Perhaps the most prominent achievement of the club has been the Silver Salties program for which the club received the Surf Lifesaving WA Community Program of the Year Award in 2021.

Community Group Award - Harvey Senior Citizens Centre Meals on Wheels

For 44 years Harvey Meals on Wheels has nourished and supported vulnerable community members. Harvey Senior Citizen's Centre Meals on Wheels currently has 83 volunteers contributing their time. All meals are cooked on the premises with deliveries made by volunteers - usually older people. Preparing in excess of 200 meals per week approximately 58 people receive this service.
