Happy NAIDOC Week – we’re celebrating 50 Years of Deadly!
National NAIDOC Week celebrations are being held across Australia this week to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is for everyone, and we’re proud to celebrate it across our community.
Here’s a snapshot of what’s happening this week:
Australind
Stories, movement and culture
Celebrate NAIDOC Week these school holidays with respected Noongar Elder Troy Bennell at Australind Library.
Children and families will have the opportunity to learn about Noongar culture and traditions through storytelling, traditional dance, movement and interactive cultural activities, while listening to stories and knowledge shared by a respected Elder. This is a wonderful opportunity to connect with local culture and learn about the rich history and traditions of the Noongar people
- Monday 6 July, 11.00am
- Australind Library
- No bookings required. For more information, contact Australind Library on 9797 4590
Sunrise Walk at Derbal Elaap
Head down to Australind during NAIDOC Week for a simple community walk celebrating connection, culture, community, and wellbeing.
This accessible community walk is an opportunity to come together, walk alongside one another, celebrate Aboriginal culture and history, and reflect on the importance of connection to Country, community, and reconciliation.
The walk will be suitable for a range of ages and abilities, with a gentle pace along the foreshore pathways. Following the walk, participants are welcome to stay for a coffee and a yarn.
As it is the school holidays, children may also enjoy some playtime at the nearby Karragarup Play Space.
This inaugural event is being kept intentionally simple and community-focused. If there is interest, we hope to explore future themed walks and community celebrations.
