Spring has arrived, which means magpies and other native birds are busy protecting their nests and young.
Magpies may swoop people who enter their nesting territory during breeding season. In the South West, swooping may occur from late August through to December.
If a magpie swoops, you should:
- Remain calm and move away from the area
If you know there is a swooping magpie in an area, you should:
- Avoid the area where possible
- Move away without running
- Wear a broad-brimmed hat and sunglasses, or carry an umbrella
- If cycling, wear a helmet, dismount and walk your bike through the area
Magpies are protected wildlife
Magpies are native fauna and are protected by legislation. It is an offence to intentionally or recklessly kill, injure, keep or move native fauna, and taking a bird or nest from the wild is illegal without a permit.
