Planning and Development Act 2005
Shire of Harvey
Notice of public advertisement of planning proposal
The local government has identified a name duplication of Wickham Road and Wickham Street in Yarloop which presents a significant risk to property occupiers when requiring emergency services to attend to the property. Wickham Road has been identified as the preferred road to be renamed given it services less properties than Wickham Street. The Shire is inviting submission for a suitable alternative name for consideration.
All names submitted are required to comply with the following requirements:
Road names containing the following will not be considered:
- Duplication of road names e.g. same or similar name used in adjoining local government or within 5km
- Road names using discriminatory or derogatory names deemed to be offensive or demeaning to an individual or group of people
- Road names using the definite article ‘The’
- Road names using prepositions for example: ‘about’, ‘above’, between’, ‘inside’, ‘near’, ‘of’, ‘onto’
- Road names using name extensions, qualifying terminology, cardinal indicators, prefixes or suffixes (for example, Upper, New, North, South, Park, Grove, Heights, Waters etc.)
- Destination-to-destination road names, for example, Midland-Perth Road
- Road names using the words ‘and’ ‘city’, ‘town’ or ‘shire’
- Road names using possessive apostrophe
- Road names named after pets
- Road names containing Titles, Honorifics or Post Nominals
- Road names using abbreviations (with exception of ‘St’ for Saint)
- Road names that use words or acronyms relating to any defense of the commonwealth (e.g. Air Force, Australian Army, Australian Navy)
- Road names named after a tragic event or accident
- Road names named after an event that occurred with the past 5 years
Names originating from an Australian Aboriginal language local to the area must be written in a standard recognized format and their use is subject to agreement from the relevant Aboriginal communities.
The approval of a name to commemorate an individual will only be considered:
- Posthumously
- With permission of the immediate family. Where the person has been deceased for more than 10 years and contact with the immediate family could not be established appropriate consultation must be carried out
- Based on a demonstrated record of achievement, having had a direct and long-term association with the location and made a significant contribution to the area
- The proposal commemorating an individual with an outstanding national or international reputation has had a direct association with the area in which it is to be located
- Such application is in the public interest and there is evidence of broad community support for the proposal.
- Initials of a given name shall not be used in the road name.
Submissions may be made on the proposal in the period ending on the 5th day of December 2025.
All queries should be directed to Brenton McQuade on 9729 0372 or Brentonm@harvey.wa.gov.au.
