Toxic Blowfish

Toxic Blowfish
13 Jan 2022

Warning for pet owners - increased amount of toxic blowfish in the waterways.

Due to warmer water temperatures this January, the migration of blowfish from the estuary to the ocean started earlier, resulting in an increased amount of these species in the ocean.

Blowfish look harmless, but they can be deadly, especially for dogs. Please always keep a close eye on your furry family member while at the beach.

  • Restrain your pet on a leash and keep them away from any blowfish.
  • If you find a blowfish along the shore, please don't just leave it on the beach. Throw it in the bin or back in the water if it's still alive to reduce the risk to other pets.
  • If your pet eats a blowfish, please seek immediate veterinary help to reduce the chance of the toxin being absorbed.

Please keep your dogs on a leash on beaches unless otherwise signposted. Our rangers will be actively patrolling beaches engaging with dog owners and targeting dogs off leads outside designated areas.
