The Shire's Administration Centres and Libraries will be closed on Monday, 2 June for the WA Day public holiday. Bin collection will not be impacted by the public holiday.

Planned Burn at Cookernup Cemetery

Cooknerup Cemetery will be temporarily closed due to a hazard reduction burn to reduce the fuel loading.

Cookernup Cemetery will be temporarily closed from 9am, Wednesday 28 May to facilitate a hazard reduction burn.

The burn will reduce fuel loading and will be conducted in a controlled manner. 

It will occur on the corner of Rose Street and Cook Street

After the burn, the site is likely to smoulder for several days. 

Cookernup Cemetery will reopen once the site has been declared safe. We expect it to reopen on 30 May 2025. 

The hazard reduction burn will be carried out by local Volunteer Bushfire Brigade members with assistance from the Shire of Harvey and Department of Fire and Emergency Services.

HELPFUL INFORMATION:

People with health conditions exacerbated by smoke should:

  • Take precautions in line with your pre-prepared treatment plan.
  • Seek medical advice from your doctor or call Health direct, on 1800 022 222.

What you should NOT do:

  • Please do not call ‘000’ unless reporting a life-threatening event.
  • The area will be monitored following the burn to ensure it is safe.
  • The area may smolder for several days.
  • Do not enter the reserve until deemed safe and all signage / hazard tape is removed.

If the weather conditions are found not to be conducive for the hazard reduction burn, it will be postponed to the next burn season. If this occurs, the community will be notified of any alternate dates for the burn.
