The Shire of Harvey is moving ahead with a brand-new rigid shade structure at Settlers Hall in Leschenault, after parents and community members shared they would love to see permanent playground cover.

Currently the site, which is owned by the Shire of Harvey, features a hard-structure shelter over the children’s play area.

A safety inspection undertaken earlier this year found that the structure had significantly deteriorated and could become unstable in high winds.

To address this, the Shire initially proposed installing an industry-standard shade sail, which would be removed in the colder, wetter months when playgrounds are not typically in high use.

Shire of Harvey Chief Executive Officer Annie Riordan said the Shire decided to install a permanent shelter after community members shared that it was a preferred option.

“We understand that sun protection is top of mind for local parents and community members, especially now that the weather is getting warmer,” the CEO said.

“Many families have shared that permanent shade coverage is a good fit for the Settlers Hall play area and the Shire has taken this feedback on board.

“It’s great to see so many community members engaged in this project, and we want to thank everyone who shared their thoughts and advocated for this solution.”

The Shire has scheduled the removal and replacement of the existing structure for April-May 2026, so families can continue to enjoy the shaded play area this summer.

The Shire of Harvey regularly inspects, repairs and upgrades community assets to ensure infrastructure is safe and compliant.
