The Shire of Harvey reflects on the 10-year anniversary of the Yarloop and Cookernup fires.
Ten years ago, our community faced one of its darkest and most defining moments. On 6 January and 7 January 2016, firestore through our region with a force we will never forget. We lost homes. We lost history. We lost livelihoods and we lost precious lives. It was a disaster that changed us forever. But in the decade since, something powerful has endured, the spirit of the Yarloop and Cookernup communities and their resilience. We pause to honour those we lost - whose memories will forever remain a part of this place. We honour our first responders and volunteers, who stepped into unimaginable danger with courage and selflessness. We honour the residents and our farming community who rebuilt, brick by brick and day by day, showing the world what true strength looks like. And we honour the surrounding communities, who opened their doors, their hearts, and their hands when our community needed them most. As we reflect on the past ten years, we acknowledge both the pain and the progress. Yarloop and Cookernup have risen. This journey hasn’t been easy. But it has shown us what community truly means. We remember. We honour. And together we continue to rebuild, with hope guiding every step forward.
