A series of professional development workshops for artists and creatives at the Myalup Community Centre from 10 February to 12 February 2023.

The Shire of Harvey, together with Paula Silbert is excited to offer a selection of five professional development workshops to community members. These workshops have been designed to support the development and growth of a creative, sustainable community of artists and makers.

Attendees will learn up-to-date and essential competencies to bolster exhibitions, projects and cultural tourism in the Shire of Harvey and Gnaala Karla Booja region.

The workshops are free and will be delivered over three days at Myalup Community Centre. Attendees must commit to attending all five sessions:

Friday, 10 February 2023, 5pm to 8.30pm.

  • Four Drop Dead Absolute Essentials for Artists. This half-day professional development workshop is a quartet of ‘necessities’ delivered in 30-minute, up-tempo presentations with current information, actions and interactions.

Saturday, 11 February 2023, 8.30am to 4.30pm.

  • Exhibitions – I want one, but where do I start? Tips and tools from the original idea to the opening event. Exhibitions, solo and group, remain a vital part of the toolkit for practitioners, studios, and collectives. It is important to know how to plan, manage, deliver and enjoy your exhibition.
  • The Gentle Art of Speaking Confidently about your Art and Studio Practice. Getting comfortable with public speaking, interviews and studio visitors. Come, unwind, and learn terrific tips to become a great conversationalist and confident public speaker.

Sunday, 12 February 2023, 8.30am to 4.30pm.

  • Hell, Yes… I Definitely Want To Be a Successful Visual Artist! Getting Clear. Getting Help. Getting Out There. Emerging artists are expected to know how to survive the visual arts without grants, unvarnished guidance and a helping hand. This session offers practical stepping stones and an action plan to self-motivate, seek quality advice, create peer support and reach self-made targets.​
  • My Open Studio – Come On In! Tips and tools for a really successful weekend. Open Studios are incredibly popular. Loads of people who might be uncomfortable visiting an arts centre or a gallery turn up to your studio and become loyal fans and buyers. Come and learn how to organise an Open Studio for yourself and your artistic friends.

You are encouraged to register and attend these workshops if you are:

  • An emerging artist: in the early stages of their creative development with 0 to 10 years of generative experience, and have a focused direction and goals while still developing their artistic “voice”, skills, finish and application.
  • An artist who has yet to be substantially celebrated within the local, state or national visual arts community, the media, funding circles or the public at large.
  • You may be academic, non-academic, amateur, primary or secondary teachers, artists and makers.
  • You may be enrolled in any full-time degree programs (undergraduate, graduate, post-graduate).
  • You are an art teacher keen to develop their own practice.
  • You are a painter, sculptor, drawer, printmaker, public installation artist, conceptual artist, graffiti artist, mural, textile, ceramics, glass, bead, metal, paper, found and recycled object maker, photography and digital video or film maker - presented in an exhibition or installation context (in the field of visual arts).
